The House of Denim

The House of Denim Amsterdam:
Archive, Embassy, Workshop
Denim City is Amsterdam's denim innovation campus of the future. It's currently being realized in a redeveloped old tram depot and is set to debut in April 2015. Denim City is the home of House of Denim. At it's heart will be an upcycling workshop, where worn denims will be sorted, repaired, re-used and recycled. There will also be a master workshop, an archive of denim(s &) media, Blue Lab and an 'Embassy' for connecting industry players.
Address:
Hannie Dankbaar Passage 33
1053 RT Amsterdam

Students of Jean School and other apprentice craftspeople will help us sort the denim into three main sections: Re-sell, Re-use and Re-cycle. Key pieces will be stored in our 'Denim Archive' for future reference.

Here's our big dream: to make premium selvedge denim from jeans recycled in Amsterdam: real Amsterdam Denim. This project is called The Red Light Selvedge.

All the great brands' creative directors have immense and wonderful archives. Sadly, their hidden to the public. Imagine being able to go through the Levis archives in SF, sit and snoop around Jason Denham's office, or mister Pierre Morrisset's legendary vintage archives... Well. Maybe it won't be THAT amazing, but probably close.

To bring to life Amsterdam's love for denim, we will be organising an event nick-named 'Denim Days' for now. It will consist of innovation lectures, shop events, launches and parties. Well come on, it's in Amsterdam, so... Stay tuned for news; first edition is planned around April '14.

Our 'tramworks' venue will also provide a home base for our 'Indigo Embassy' international networking platform. Visiting denim industry players can be welcomed here, meet local denimheads, give guest lectures and generally hang out

Jeans that are not interesting enough to be re-sold or re-used, will be sent to the shredder. No waste though: this cotton fibre will be brought back into the denim production chain as a starting source for cotton. Closing the loop!

Denims selected for re-use will serve to make a number of signature products (tbd) or kept on stock for use by Jean School students or repair customers.

Some of our designs will be made public online, so that everyone in the world can enjoy giving their worn jeans a second life, rather than throwing them away.

In most cases, the top part of jeans are hard to re-use, due to heavy stitching, zips and rivets. For practicality's sake, therefore, we will make 'hot pants' and use the 'legs' for making new items.
